Using Campus Resources: Reasons to Connect with Career Development

Attending college involves a lot of hard work and dedication. For many students, there was a gap between high school and college, or they took other routes, or had to balance school with other priorities. These students, including many at Herzing, must think about the families they take care of, the full-time jobs they have from 9-to-5, or other responsibilities beyond school. For them, earning a degree is an especially major time commitment.

Managing your time can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. The resilience and motivation that Herzing students show every day is inspiring. While students are capable of maneuvering through school independently, having the right resources available can ultimately help save time, reduce stress, and ensure that you don’t feel like you’re going it alone.

 How Can Herzing’s Career Development Team Support Me?

At Herzing, every student is assigned a Career Development Coach to provide 1:1 support when you are in school and even after graduation. Consistent encouragement and assistance allow students or alumni to receive high quality career support whenever they need it. As a career coach, I have worked with many students on resume reviews, job interview prep, and addressing the full spectrum of questions they have along the way. We work with students and alumni to present the ultimate best look to employers so they can be successful when applying to their next big position.  Among my favorite areas to assist with include:

• Mock Interviews: Have you received feedback from an employer after an interview? Likely, the answer is “no.” Companies normally do not give feedback after an interview or share why you did not get the position. It can be a frustrating feeling to never know how you could have done better. A mock interview can help prepare a student to be successful in an interview and reduce the stress. During this time, career coaches can prepare you for what an employer is looking for, how to answer tough questions, and what questions to ask an employer.  This time is also used to talk about being professional, how to dress, and feedback on their interview responses.  The more a person feels confident and well-prepared, the better they will do during their next big interview.
• Job Search: Herzing’s Career Development Team can also talk through what the student/graduate is looking for in a position and how to find a place that each student deems a perfect fit.  In addition, we provide support for those looking for internships or experiential learning.  After gathering the student’s wants and needs for employment, we can send job links or introduce students directly to recruiters in the area.   The team can also help to get your LinkedIn profile updated and provide suggestions on how to build your professional network. The resources we share can be extremely valuable and can make a difference in your experience during school, and even after graduation.
• Addressing the $$$ Question: Another area of importance is knowing the market average value. Students have access to our Market Value Insights site, where they can find out what positions are paying where they live and the outlook for their career path. This information gives them a heads-up on average salaries in their area. If they need help negotiating salary, that is another topic we can tackle as a team. We are committed to creating a collaborative environment as a support system, working with students to ensure they feel supported every step of the way.

Our Career Development department is just one of the many on-campus and online resources that can help students and alumni achieve the careers they’ve always wanted. One of the greatest joys for me and my colleagues is seeing our students become the most successful versions of themselves.
